Priyanka Chopra Almost Played Surpanakha in Nitesh Tiwari’s ₹835 Cr Ramayana Epic
Rakul Preet Singh now steps into the pivotal role in the mega mythological saga featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Yash, and Sai Pallavi; film to release in two parts by 2027.

Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious mythological films in Indian cinema history — with a reported budget of ₹835 crore and a stellar cast drawing major attention. But behind the scenes, there was an intriguing casting twist: Global icon Priyanka Chopra was nearly finalized to play the fierce and controversial role of Surpanakha, Ravana’s sister.
According to a report by ETimes, the makers were initially very keen on bringing Priyanka on board for the role of Surpanakha, a character who plays a pivotal part in triggering the events of the Ramayana. However, due to her tightly packed commitments to international projects, Priyanka had to decline the offer.
A source close to the production revealed, “Surpanakha is one of the catalysts of the Ramayan’s core conflict. The team saw Priyanka as the perfect fit, but scheduling conflicts made it impossible.” Eventually, the role was offered to Rakul Preet Singh, who reportedly impressed the team with her look test and was said to bring a “new and intense” take to the character. Although Rakul hasn’t publicly confirmed her casting yet, excitement is already building around her potential portrayal.

Ramayana also boasts a lineup of powerhouse performers. Ranbir Kapoor will step into the role of Lord Ram, while Sai Pallavi, in her Hindi film debut, will play Sita. Kannada superstar Yash is taking on the daunting role of Ravana.
The film will be released in two parts, with the first installment slated for 2026 and the second for 2027.
