Nicole Kidman’s ‘Babygirl’: A Bold Exploration of Female Desire
Actress hopes new erotic thriller will be “liberating” for women
Nicole Kidman is hoping to spark conversations with her latest film, “Babygirl.” The actress, who stars as a high-powered CEO entangled in a passionate affair with her much younger intern, believes the erotic thriller is a “liberating story” for women.
Speaking at the Venice Film Festival, Kidman discussed the raunchy themes of the film, emphasizing its exploration of sex, desire, secrets, marriage, truth, power, and consent. She highlighted the unique perspective brought by female director Halina Reijn, who wrote and directed the film. “It was very dear to our shared instincts and very freeing,” Kidman said.
The buzzy A24 film also stars Antonio Banderas, Sophie Wilde, and Esther McGregor. Kidman praised her collaboration with Reijn, noting that she felt safe and protected on set. “There was enormous caretaking by all of us,” she said. “It felt very authentic, protected, and, at the same time, real.”
Despite the film’s provocative nature, Kidman admitted to feeling nervous about the premiere. “This definitely leaves me exposed and vulnerable and frightened,” she said. However, she emphasized the intimacy and delicacy of the filmmaking process.
Reijn explained that one of the main reasons for making “Babygirl” was to address the “huge orgasm gap” between men and women. The film’s release is set for December 25.
