Jim Carrey Teases Return as “The Mask”: “It Has to Be the Right Idea”
The comedy legend hints at reprising iconic roles, including Stanley Ipkiss and the Grinch, if the stars align.

Jim Carrey might once again don the iconic green mask that turned him into a whirlwind of chaos and hilarity. In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, the beloved actor shared that he’s open to revisiting his 1994 breakout role in The Mask—but only if the project feels right.
“Oh gosh, you know, it has to be the right idea,” Carrey explained. “If somebody had the right idea, I guess… It’s not really about the money. I joke about the money… But I never know. You can’t be definite about these things. I said I’d like to retire, but I think I was talking more about power-resting. Because as soon as a good idea comes your way, or a group of people that you really enjoyed working with and stuff, it just — things tend to change.”

The 1994 hit follows bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss (Carrey), who transforms into a zany, unstoppable superhero after discovering a mysterious mask. The film, which also starred Cameron Diaz in her debut role, remains one of Carrey’s most iconic performances.
Carrey’s openness to reprising The Mask isn’t the only trip down memory lane he’s considering. He recently told ComicBook.com that he’d be willing to return as the Grinch in a sequel to How the Grinch Stole Christmas—but only if they “figure out the Grinch” costume.

In the 2000 holiday classic, Carrey endured a grueling, full-body prosthetic and green makeup process, which he previously described as “extremely excruciating.” Despite the challenges, his portrayal of the mischievous Grinch remains a holiday staple.
Carrey has also stayed active in recent years by reprising his role as Dr. Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He returns as the villain in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, slated to hit theaters on December 20. In a candid comment to the Associated Press, Carrey quipped about why he keeps returning to fan-favorite roles: “I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And, you know, it’s just… I bought a lot of stuff, and I need the money, frankly.”
While the future of The Mask sequel remains uncertain, one thing is clear: when it comes to Jim Carrey, fans can always expect the unexpected.
