Javed Akhtar Slams ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ for Faking Feminism

Veteran Lyricist Questions Portrayal of Women in Yash Chopra’s Romantic Drama

Bollywood’s celebrated lyricist Javed Akhtar has stirred a controversy by criticizing the portrayal of women in the iconic Yash Chopra film, ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’. The 2012 romantic drama, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, and Anushka Sharma, was a box office hit, but Akhtar believes it missed the mark when it came to depicting female empowerment.

During a recent appearance on the talk show ‘Be A Man, Yaar!’, Akhtar expressed his disappointment with a particular dialogue in the film. He questioned the character’s claim of wanting to marry a man from every nationality as a sign of empowerment, suggesting it was a superficial and inaccurate representation of strong female characters.

Known for his sharp wit and outspoken opinions, Akhtar asserted that Indian cinema often struggles to authentically portray empowered women, resorting to clichés instead. He believes that ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’, despite its commercial success, falls into this category.

Akhtar’s comments have sparked a debate about the portrayal of women in Bollywood and whether the industry has evolved in its depiction of female characters.
