James Gunn Shuts Down Wonder Woman Casting Buzz Around Adria Arjona

“She’d be great, but no — I didn’t just follow her,” says Gunn, clarifying social media rumors linking Arjona to DC’s iconic superhero role.

James Gunn is setting the record straight about the growing fan speculation around actress Adria Arjona possibly being cast as the new Wonder Woman in his revamped DC Universe.

The buzz began after fans noticed Gunn recently followed Arjona on Instagram. Given Gunn’s role as co-head of DC Studios and the fact that Wonder Woman has yet to be recast in the new DCU, this small online action sparked major casting rumors.

In a recent interview with Extra, Gunn directly addressed the situation. “I follow Adria on Instagram, and suddenly everyone assumed that meant she’s Wonder Woman,” Gunn said, laughing. “She’d be a great Wonder Woman, by the way — but I’ve known her for years.”

Gunn clarified that the social media follow wasn’t new. “We worked together on The Belko Experiment back in 2016. I’ve followed her since then — not just recently.”

Arjona, known for her roles in Morbius, Andor, and Father of the Bride, worked with Gunn when he wrote and produced The Belko Experiment, directed by Greg McLean. Gunn’s longtime producing partner and current DC Studios co-chief, Peter Safran, also produced the film.

Earlier this year, Arjona was also asked about the Wonder Woman speculation during an interview with CinemaBlend. She had nothing but praise for Gunn: “I love James Gunn. He gave me my first studio film — I owe him a lot.”

When asked if Gunn following her hinted at anything big, Arjona remained coy, playfully responding with a smile and crossed fingers: “I don’t know.”

If she were to be cast, Arjona would follow Gal Gadot, who made her debut as Diana Prince in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and led her own solo films in Wonder Woman (2017) and Wonder Woman 1984 (2020). Gadot also made brief appearances in Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash in 2023.

As for Gunn’s DCU, it has officially begun with the animated series Creature Commandos, but the first live-action film, Superman starring David Corenswet, will launch the studio’s new “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters” storyline in 2025.

So, for now, Adria Arjona as Wonder Woman remains fan-casting fantasy — but according to Gunn, it’s not entirely out of the realm of possibility.
