HBO Max Pulls the Plug on Pretty Little Liars Revival After Two Seasons

Horror-Inspired Reboot Ends Abruptly Despite Season Two Tease of More Thrills

Max has decided to cancel its revival of Pretty Little Liars after airing two seasons of the horror-infused take on the beloved 2010s mystery series originally from ABC Family/Freeform.

The streaming platform announced the cancellation about three months following the conclusion of PLL’s second season, subtitled Summer School, which wrapped up its run in June.

In a statement, Max expressed gratitude to co-creators Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring, along with the team at Warner Bros. Television, for reintroducing fans to a new version of the Liars who unite against the latest menacing force in Millwood. The series combined a unique modern creative vision with the talents of its cast and crew, infusing the story with a fun, horror-filled perspective that honored its roots in Rosewood.

Season two of the series concluded with a tantalizing hint at more potential scares, depicting a group of girls wearing masks resembling the original five Liars walking through their high school hallway. However, this image will now remain unresolved.

The Pretty Little Liars reboot received a direct-to-series order from what was then known as HBO Max in September 2020. Titled Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin for its first season, the series premiered on July 28, 2022, and quickly earned a renewal for a second season after its initial run.

Season two featured Bailee Madison, Chandler Kinney, Zaria, Malia Pyles, Maia Reficco, Mallory Bechtel, Sharon Leal, Alex Aiono, Jordan Gonzalez, and Elias Kacavas in starring roles. Aguirre-Sacasa (known for Riverdale) and Bring served as executive producers alongside PLL creator Marlene King, Leslie Morgenstein, and Gina Girolamo from Alloy Entertainment, and Michael Grassi.

The news of the cancellation was first reported by TVLine, marking the end of this chapter for Pretty Little Liars on Max.
