From Targaryen Wars to Starfighter Skirmishes: Matt Smith Set as Villain in Star Wars Feature

The House of the Dragon star will face off against Ryan Gosling in the upcoming Star Wars standalone film directed by Shawn Levy.

After commanding dragons and political chaos in House of the Dragon, Matt Smith is now heading to a galaxy far, far away. The British actor has been cast in Lucasfilm’s upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter, a new standalone feature that will see him take on a villainous role.

Joining Smith in this highly anticipated project are Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth, with direction by Shawn Levy and a script penned by Jonathan Tropper. The film is set to begin production in the fall and has been scheduled for release on May 28, 2027.

Although specific character details remain tightly under wraps, sources reveal that Smith will play one of the film’s central antagonists. Lucasfilm reportedly considered several actors before locking in Smith, aiming to craft a memorable new villain in the Star Wars universe.

Unveiled during the Star Wars Celebration event in Tokyo, Starfighter is set five years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. This positions the film after the end of the Skywalker Saga, allowing for fresh storylines and new characters to take center stage.

Shawn Levy, known for blending action and emotion in films like Free Guy and Deadpool & Wolverine, is directing the project. With Gosling expected to portray a heroic protector and Goth taking on another villain role, the ensemble is already generating major buzz.

Matt Smith, who recently wrapped up the second season of House of the Dragon, continues to diversify his career. He will also star in Caught Stealing, a thriller produced by Sony and Darren Aronofsky, opposite Austin Butler. In addition, Smith will appear in the upcoming limited series The Death of Bunny Monro.

With its cast, timeline, and original story direction, Star Wars: Starfighter is shaping up to be one of the most exciting chapters in the franchise’s future. Fans of both fantasy and sci-fi can expect Smith to bring his signature intensity to a universe full of lightsabers, starfighters, and high-stakes drama.
