Emily Deschanel Nearly Quit Bones After Season 1 Due to Overwork and Anxiety
The actress reveals how crushing stress, long hours, and emotional burnout almost ended her journey before Bones became a 12-season success.

Emily Deschanel, best known for her iconic role as Dr. Temperance Brennan on Bones, has revealed that she almost walked away from the show during its very first season. In a candid conversation on David Duchovny’s Fail Better podcast, the actress opened up about the intense mental and physical toll the early days of the series took on her.
Deschanel recalled being overwhelmed by grueling 14- to 16-hour workdays, paired with heavy dialogue loads that left her memorizing lines late into the night. “I’d go home and just cry in the bathtub every night because I was so overwhelmed,” she said. “I was getting no sleep and trying to remember lines I’d just learned the night before.”
The breaking point came when Deschanel arrived 30 minutes late to set due to a traffic accident. That misstep triggered a rare visit from Bones creator Hart Hanson, who informed her that the studio had raised concerns about her punctuality and preparedness. “I get emotional just thinking about it now,” Deschanel admitted. “I was a wreck. I took it so hard. I was such a fragile person at the time.”

At that moment, Deschanel seriously considered quitting. But fate had other plans. The very next day, she learned the show had been picked up for more episodes. In response to her struggles, Hanson stepped in to help—offering her a larger trailer, schedule adjustments, and more downtime to run lines.
“Hart helped me find ways to be better and actually get my job done,” she said gratefully. “He’s just a good one. We were so lucky.”
Bones went on to become one of Fox’s longest-running dramas, airing 246 episodes across 12 seasons from 2005 to 2017. Alongside David Boreanaz, Michaela Conlin, T.J. Thyne, and Tamara Taylor, Deschanel’s portrayal of the brilliant forensic anthropologist helped make the series a cult favorite.
Deschanel’s story is a powerful reminder of the emotional challenges actors face behind the scenes—even when the spotlight is shining the brightest.
