Downton Abbey 3 to Feature Heartfelt Tribute to Late Dame Maggie Smith
Upcoming film to honor the legacy of Violet Crawley and the actress who brought her to life
The third installment of the “Downton Abbey” film series is set to include a poignant tribute to Dame Maggie Smith, who passed away on September 27, 2024, at the age of 89.
Smith’s portrayal of Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, was a cornerstone of the series, and her character’s passing was already scripted for the upcoming film.
Executive producer Gareth Neame noted that Smith’s recent death adds a deeper resonance to the narrative. “The loss of the Dowager now feels far more significant,” Neame stated. “We see actors mourning the family matriarch, and simultaneously, there’s a genuine mourning for the matriarch of the show.”
Smith’s distinguished career spanned over seven decades, earning her two Academy Awards, five BAFTAs, and three Emmys. She was widely acclaimed for her roles in “Harry Potter” as Professor Minerva McGonagall and in “Downton Abbey” as Violet Crawley.
The upcoming film, scheduled for release on September 12, 2025, aims to honor both the character of Violet Crawley and the actress who portrayed her. Neame emphasized the cast and crew’s deep respect for Smith, stating, “We will never see the like of Dame Maggie Smith ever again.”
The tribute is expected to resonate with audiences, reflecting the collective loss of a beloved character and the esteemed actress behind her.
