Dipika Chikhlia Criticizes Modern Adaptations of Ramayana: “Stop Making a Mess of It”

The iconic actress expresses strong disapproval of new interpretations, urging filmmakers to explore other historical narratives

The anticipation is high for the upcoming film “Ramayana,” starring Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi, which is currently in production under the direction of Nitesh Tiwari. The director is reportedly sparing no expense to create a visual masterpiece. However, actress Dipika Chikhlia, renowned for her portrayal of Maa Sita, is strongly opposed to this endeavor. Here’s the latest scoop.

Speculation surrounds the Nitesh Tiwari directorial, including rumors of a star-studded cast featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, Sunny Deol, Yash, Vijay Sethupathi, Lara Dutta, Arun Govil, and Ravi Dubey. Dipika Chikhlia is concerned about filmmakers altering religious texts to introduce ‘newness’ to their projects.

In an interview with India Today, Dipika Chikhlia expressed her belief that filmmakers should stop remaking Ramayana as it often leads to a “mess.” She criticized the trend of adding a “new story, new angle, new look” to the traditional narrative. To illustrate her point, she referred to Om Raut’s “Adipurush,” claiming the film lost the essence of Ramayana with modern changes like Kriti Sanon’s pink-colored satin saree and Saif Ali Khan’s “new look.”

Addressing Nitesh Tiwari’s “Ramayana,” Dipika Chikhlia remarked, “One should not tamper with religious texts. I don’t think one should be doing it and just leave it aside. Just don’t do this. There are so many stories that you can talk about besides Ramayan. Speak about a lot of freedom fighters. There’s so much that one can talk about; unsung heroes who were valiant in history for freedom. Why only Ramayan?”

Nitesh Tiwari has yet to officially announce details about the epic mythological film. While the release date remains eagerly awaited, rumors suggest that the Ranbir Kapoor starrer might hit theaters sometime in 2027.
