Bruce Springsteen Reflects on Jeremy Allen White Playing Him in Deeply Personal Biopic
The music icon opens up about the emotional weight of ‘Deliver Me From Nowhere’ and how he gave space to the actors during filming.

Bruce Springsteen has opened up about the emotional journey of watching actor Jeremy Allen White step into his shoes for the upcoming biopic Deliver Me From Nowhere. Directed by Scott Cooper and based on Warren Zanes’ 2023 book, the film delves into the intimate and difficult chapter of Springsteen’s life surrounding the creation of his 1982 album Nebraska.
Speaking to Rolling Stone, Springsteen acknowledged the experience was far from easy. “The movie involves, in some ways, some of the most painful days of my life,” he shared. Because of that, he sometimes chose to stay away from the set during especially sensitive scenes. “I wanted the actors to feel completely free,” he said. “If there was a scene coming up that was really deeply personal, I’d just stay at home.”
During the early part of filming, Springsteen was on tour in Canada, limiting his presence on set. But whenever director Scott Cooper asked for his input, he tried to be there. “If Scott wanted or needed me there for something, I would try to make it,” he said, emphasizing that he didn’t want to interfere with the process.

The film stars The Bear actor Jeremy Allen White as Springsteen, with Jeremy Strong portraying his longtime manager and producer Jon Landau. The first trailer, released recently after a sneak peek at CinemaCon, showcases White’s portrayal of the rock legend, including a performance of Springsteen’s iconic track Born to Run.
Despite the heavy subject matter, Springsteen approached the project with humor and humility. “I’m sure it’s much worse for the actor than for me,” he quipped. He also praised White’s professionalism and patience, saying, “Jeremy was very tolerant of me the days I’d appear on set. I told him, ‘Look, if I’m ever in the way, just give me the look and I’m gone.’”
Rounding out the cast are Stephen Graham, Odessa Young, Paul Walter Hauser, Gaby Hoffmann, Johnny Cannizzaro, Harrison Gilbertson, Marc Maron, David Krumholtz, and Chris Jaymes. Deliver Me From Nowhere is set to hit theaters on October 24, promising an emotional, music-filled look at one of Springsteen’s most introspective eras.
